Bamboo flooring is a fairly new way to add a modern flavor to any home. You might think it would resemble something a panda would eat, but it actually just looks like a hardwood floor. It has a couple of advantages over a real hardwood floor, but, even so, it might not be the right type of flooring for you. Be sure to look at the traits of hardwood, laminate, linoleum, and bamboo flooring to find which one is the best to suit your style and your household, as well as your budget.
One of the advantages of bamboo flooring is that it allows the consumer to have a real wood floor, while eliminating the need to cut down trees. It is also a bit cheaper than hardwood floors. They add to the resale value of a house if they are well kept, and they have all of the style of hardwood flooring.
A disadvantage that some people have experienced with bamboo flooring is a lack of durability. Darker bamboo flooring is created by pressure steaming it. This carbonizes the bamboo to make it darker. The darker the flooring, the less durable it will be. It can be prone to dents and scratches. However, it all really depends on how the bamboo is processed and treated.
The best thing you can do to find out if bamboo flooring is durable enough for you is to get a sample of it, and to press it with your thumbnail or a coin. Some stores have better quality bamboo flooring. But bamboo flooring is generally about as durable as normal hardwood floors. If you are careful to not slide furniture around, and if you make sure the bamboo is well made, you will prevent premature damage and you will enjoy your bamboo flooring for a long time.
Granite tile is a very popular type of flooring material these days. It is also very common to be used for countertops. Granite is extremely easy to clean, as well as quite durable. There is also the fact that it makes a kitchen very stylish. Many kitchens showcased in magazines and on television have granite counter tops or granite tile. Be sure to read up on how to take care of granite before you have it installed, and work diligently to find out what kind would look best in your kitchen.
The one inconvenience you might have with granite tile is that it is somewhat absorbent. You will find that some foods, such as beets, red wine, and certain vegetables, can easily stain your tile or counter top if not wiped away immediately. If you do get a stain, there are solutions you can use to absorb the stain, and these will usually work pretty well. There are also cleaners you will have to use to wipe down the floor tile with, or clean the granite counter top if you prepare food on it.
Granite tile is a very heavy floor covering, so make sure that you are able to install it, as you must have sub flooring that is able to carry the weight. You can design your granite floor with diamonds, squares, and rectangles using different colors of granite. The possibilities are endless and can make a great conversation piece. If you will be putting the tile down yourself, be sure to use plastic spacers for the most accurate placement.
Granite tile takes your kitchen to a new level of decorating and will add a modern touch to any décor. Stay away from tiles that are too dark or too light; they will detract from the rest of your furniture and decorations. Try several different colors in your home before committing to a big purchase.
It has been proven that one of the upgrades that gives the most value to a home is an improvement in the bathroom. One upgrade that can be reasonably priced and easily done is adding a bathroom vanity. There are a variety of styles of vanities in many finishes and sizes.
The purpose of adding a bathroom vanity to replace a sink is to give work or counter space and to add storage space below while concealing the pipe structure that is under the existing sink. The basic one sink vanity can come in two or three pieces. First is the cabinet and secondly either a counter top with a separate sink or a sink integrated into the counter top.
The first step that you will need to do is to measure the space where you wish to add the bathroom vanity. If you are fortunate to have a large space to work in you may choose to upgrade to a double sink and vanity at this time. There are also small, compact versions of vanities that will fit in a smaller bathroom space.
If the space in your bathroom is limited and the vanity must be up against the bathtub you will want to choose a material that is water proof, or put a water proof surround up to keep the water from the tub away from the vanity cabinet. When the existing sink is across from the tub it is easier to add a vanity without making extra changes to the structure of the room or adding a new surround to the tub or shower.
Adding a vanity to your bathroom adds value, storage and a finished look. Vanities are available in wood or composite materials or even glass and metal. Adding a vanity to your bathroom is an upgrade that a homeowner can easily accomplish for a reasonable investment.
Tankless water heaters are a great way to save energy. Conventional water heaters, as you probably know, are large tanks that are kept at a constant temperature of your choice. Gas or electric, they are almost constantly heating the water whether you are using it or not. A tankless water heater works much differently, providing hot water only as it is needed without a large holding tank.
When you’re using a tankless water heater and turn on the hot water faucet, cold water flows through the pipe and into the water heater. A gas or electric heating element brings the water to a temperature that you have pre-selected then sends it to the faucet you have turned on. Since power is not used until you actually turn on the hot water faucet, a tankless water heater can save you up to 22% a year on fuel costs.
Tankless water heaters are very convenient since you don’t have to wait for a tank to be refilled after someone takes a shower or uses the dishwasher. The flow rate is limited, of course, because of the way the water is heated so some adjustments may have to be made. Most of these water heaters produce about 2-5 gallons of hot water per minute which is more than adequate for two or three people. Gas powered models have a higher flow rate than electric ones. If you have a large family you might want to install more than one tankless water heater but if you’re like most of us, you’re already in the habit of conserving water and saving energy. In this case, a tankless water heater will not significantly impact your hot water usage.
Tankless water heaters are great for hot tubs, replacing conventional water heaters or as a backup for solar water heaters. They last about 20 years and parts are easily replaceable.
Selling your home can be difficult but there are a lot of things you can do to attract the right kind of buyer. Even though the economic conditions might not be as good as they used to, there are people that are looking for a house exactly like yours—you just have to make it appear to match what they have pictured their dream home to be. It’s not as hard as you think!
Your best tool when selling your home, or any property, is your creativity and ingenuity. Yes, curb appeal is important but once the potential buyers are inside the house it is up to you to convince them that yours is the house that they want. In order to do that, you have to make it easy for them to picture the house full of their furniture, mementos, artwork and other possessions.
Paint is the ideal way to make your home a blank canvas for buyers’ imaginations! Even though you might think that beautiful shade of mauve is perfect for your living room, a buyer walking in may look at the color and not be able to see their chrome and glass coffee tables fitting in. For this reason it’s best to paint the rooms in your home with neutral colors.
Neutral colors don’t have to be boring, however. We’ve all seen houses that are stark white throughout every room and thought that the house or apartment lacked personality. White is not the only neutral color available, not by a long shot! As you browse through the paint department of any hardware or home improvement store, you’ll see a lot of different shades of white. There is cream, meringue, eggshell, ricotta, vanilla, marshmallow and antique white to name just a few. If you want to showcase a room that gets a lot of sun, a cream color will make it look warm and welcoming as well as neutral.
