Tankless water heaters are a great way to save energy. Conventional water heaters, as you probably know, are large tanks that are kept at a constant temperature of your choice. Gas or electric, they are almost constantly heating the water whether you are using it or not. A tankless water heater works much differently, providing hot water only as it is needed without a large holding tank.

When you’re using a tankless water heater and turn on the hot water faucet, cold water flows through the pipe and into the water heater. A gas or electric heating element brings the water to a temperature that you have pre-selected then sends it to the faucet you have turned on. Since power is not used until you actually turn on the hot water faucet, a tankless water heater can save you up to 22% a year on fuel costs.

Tankless water heaters are very convenient since you don’t have to wait for a tank to be refilled after someone takes a shower or uses the dishwasher. The flow rate is limited, of course, because of the way the water is heated so some adjustments may have to be made. Most of these water heaters produce about 2-5 gallons of hot water per minute which is more than adequate for two or three people. Gas powered models have a higher flow rate than electric ones. If you have a large family you might want to install more than one tankless water heater but if you’re like most of us, you’re already in the habit of conserving water and saving energy. In this case, a tankless water heater will not significantly impact your hot water usage.

Tankless water heaters are great for hot tubs, replacing conventional water heaters or as a backup for solar water heaters. They last about 20 years and parts are easily replaceable.

Selling your home can be difficult but there are a lot of things you can do to attract the right kind of buyer. Even though the economic conditions might not be as good as they used to, there are people that are looking for a house exactly like yours—you just have to make it appear to match what they have pictured their dream home to be. It’s not as hard as you think!

Your best tool when selling your home, or any property, is your creativity and ingenuity. Yes, curb appeal is important but once the potential buyers are inside the house it is up to you to convince them that yours is the house that they want. In order to do that, you have to make it easy for them to picture the house full of their furniture, mementos, artwork and other possessions.

Paint is the ideal way to make your home a blank canvas for buyers’ imaginations! Even though you might think that beautiful shade of mauve is perfect for your living room, a buyer walking in may look at the color and not be able to see their chrome and glass coffee tables fitting in. For this reason it’s best to paint the rooms in your home with neutral colors.

Neutral colors don’t have to be boring, however. We’ve all seen houses that are stark white throughout every room and thought that the house or apartment lacked personality. White is not the only neutral color available, not by a long shot! As you browse through the paint department of any hardware or home improvement store, you’ll see a lot of different shades of white. There is cream, meringue, eggshell, ricotta, vanilla, marshmallow and antique white to name just a few. If you want to showcase a room that gets a lot of sun, a cream color will make it look warm and welcoming as well as neutral.

If you are thinking of paving your driveway, patio, walkway or deck you’ve probably discovered that you have a lot of options when it comes to materials. However, brick pavers have more advantages than other types of materials.

Brick pavers are made of either clay or concrete aggregates fired at temperatures exceeding two thousand degrees. This makes them strong and durable and avoids the expense and irritation of cracking or discoloring. Indeed, there are brick streets that have been used for over 200 years! While your home improvement project isn’t a heavily trafficked street, durability is important.

Brick pavers are very easy to install with a minimum of tools. Nearly anyone can install a brick walkway, patio, driveway or decorative focal point. All you need do is lay down a bed of sand, tamp it down firmly; lay the bricks then sweep more sand between the cracks. If you like you can apply some water sealing but because bricks are porous, water passes right through them. Brick paved surfaces rarely see water pooling or puddles and therefore are a great option if you live in an area that gets snow and ice in the winter.

Brick paving doesn’t crack as other materials do when the temperature experiences rapid swings; they are also movable if you decide you are tired of the arrangement. Brick is non-slip and skid resistant so they are very safe, especially in climates with moderate to heavy precipitation. Many homeowners as well as municipalities use brick paving around swimming pools, fountains and other outdoor areas.

Brick pavers’ colors are not affected by the sun’s ultraviolet rays so their color won’t fade or change. They are very low maintenance and easy to care for. These pavers come in a variety of colors so that if you wish, you can opt for a design rather than color consistency.

Bifold doors are a great solution whether you’re trying to save space or simply want to change the look of a room. There are many different materials to choose from; there are wooden doors made of pine, beech, mahogany, maple or less expensive laminates. You can choose bifold doors with mirrors which make a room appear bigger, a wood or laminate with an attractive grain or even louvered models to create a more relaxed and casual atmosphere. You can get bifold doors to match the style or change the look of the room.

These doors are an excellent way to spruce up a room whether you’re on a budget or don’t have to watch expenses. They are less expensive than even hollow core doors and you can find them at nearly any home improvement or hardware store. They are easy to operate and last as long as or longer than conventional doors.

If you need to save space, bifold doors are a great solution! Rather than have a closet door that swings out and prevents you from using that space, bifold doors fold flat against the side of the closet or room opening that they protect. If you have a long, narrow closet a set of bifold doors will allow you to access those corners that would be difficult to use with conventional closet doors.

Bifold doors aren’t only for closets, however. Laundry rooms are more spacious with bifold doors and if you want to close off a room occasionally, these doors are a beautiful way to provide privacy. When opened, they are much less obtrusive than regular doors.

You can customize bifold doors, too! Whether your opening is arched, extra wide, taller than standard doors or even an irregular shape you can order bifold doors that fit your exact specifications.

There are many reasons why you might benefit from investing in replacement windows. You might be interested in making the most of the money you spend on your heating and cooling bills during the winter and summer. Maybe your windows are just worn out and are not closing and opening quite like they used to when you first owned them. You might just want a change of pace, maybe because you moved in or want to sell your house. Be sure that you are getting the right replacement windows that will easily compliment the style and décor in your home.

The glass pane is part of how you can save energy with replacement windows this summer or winter. If you invest in double or even triple paned glass, your windows will be able to insulate, which means it will keep any heat or cold from getting into your home. This will keep the cold outside and the warmth inside in the winter time, and the heat outside and the cool inside in the summer time. There are also special coatings that the glass can be treated with to help reflect the heat energy. You can also look into windows with layers of gas between the panes, which will further insulate your home. Whether you would want double or triple pane windows will depend on your climate.

The window frame on your replacement windows is also very important. It should be made of wood, fiberglass composite, or vinyl, as these materials are excellent insulators. As you might imagine, metal frames such as those made of aluminum will transfer heat or coldness very easily. Look for frames that are sturdy, and make sure that the people who install the replacement windows, even if it is yourself, do it correctly so that they windows are professionally installed. Replacement windows are a good investment for many reasons, and energy conservation is an increasingly common one.

Recessed lighting has become very popular because of its versatility and ability to create ambience. It’s easy to install and maintain and very cost effective depending on which type of bulb you choose to use.

There are many ways you can use recessed lighting to showcase your home, draw attention to an area or serve as a practical tool to help you with your work. Many people like to use recessed lighting to highlight a work of art, a painting or a collection of glassware or other things they want to show off. This type of lighting accentuates without being obvious, creating a focal point rather than spotlighting an area. It also opens up a room and makes it look and feel bigger; this is why you see many museums making liberal use of recessed lighting.

Recessed lighting is an excellent way to provide glare-free illumination for other areas, too. The kitchen is one area where this type of lighting really shines, so to speak. By placing recessed lights under cupboards or in the ceiling you can enjoy the brightness of light you need without unattractive fixtures, spacing it to shine just where you need it. Many people like to use it, dimmed, as subtle night lighting to prevent falls and guide the way around the house as well as the kitchen.

It’s important not to place recessed lighting fixtures too close together. The general guideline is one foot apart for every inch of diameter. For example, 4” fixtures should be placed no closer than four feet apart. Rows of recessed lighting should also be avoided as they make a room appear sterile and cold.

Incandescent, or “A” bulbs, provide inexpensive lighting for general purposes. “R” bulbs are the most common and have a reflective surface on the back to provide more light. Halogen bulbs are good if you like clean white light to highlight special features of your home.

Solar power has been around for many years now, and it has gone from awkward large panels that provided some heat to a house if located in the right place to whole house power grids. It has become so popular that many people are engaged in making their own solar power panels.

The price of energy continues to go up, and we are confronted every summer with power outages on the electrical grid. Commercial solar panes, when installed run about $7.50 per watt. The cost to power an average home with commercially produced solar panels is about $27,000. The other option is to select projects from do it yourself libraries or to search the internet for solar projects that will power your home. You can even shop and compare different ways to produce solar power for your home.

One method of generating power from the sun is with a mirrored system called a heliostat. Heliostat systems can be controlled through computer software and you can focus the power from your heliostat directly into rooms or into storage cells. Other solar panels accumulate the energy from the sun into a panel or box and again it is converted and stored in storage cells. In addition to the storage cells the other component that you will need is an inverter that converts the stored direct current into alternating current that you would use to power your home.

Shopping online you can find solar energy manuals that will let you build your own solar energy cells for less than $200. Once you install them you are eliminating a power bill every month. In some areas you can sell back the excess power you do not use to the power company. Practical solar power for the home lowers or eliminates the cost of running your home and becomes an investment that will be paying you back for years.

An air-powered paint sprayer uses air compressors to spray the paint with great force whereas airless paint sprayers use motorized pumps to pressurize the paint and to push it out through the sprayer. The paint is pulled out with a fine mist with the help of built in atomized tube.

This will provide smooth foam to exit out with the minimum amount of paint. An airless paint sprayer can make quick work of even the biggest painting jobs. They are portable and can be easy to tilt the paint over the quart or to pull paint directly from the container. Airless paint sprayers can handle any type of paint like primer, stain, varnish etc. Even thick paint can be handled by the airless sprayers which usually cannot be handled with other type of sprayers.

How the airless paint sprayer works

Airless sprayers come with a pump, hose, tip and gun. The narrow end of the hose is connected to the nozzle and the wider end will go into the paint. The gun allows the painter to control the flow of the paint. If you press the trigger, the valve of the sprayer opens and allows the paint to flow through the tip. There are various sizes of sprayer tips available in the market. The size of the tips determines the amount of paint flow through the nozzle.

There are two basic types of airless sprayer pumps: piston and diaphragm. A piston pump is used to draw thicker paints whereas the diaphragm is used for the thinner paints and varnishes. The pump gets hydraulic power from the motor. When the piston moves up, vacuum is created and this will draw the paint into the chamber. This is how an airless paint sprayer works.

You can find lots of garage door openers in the market today. All you need to do is to buy the best one to suit your needs. Each one has its own different raising and lowering mechanisms to raise or to open your garage door. Here are some steps to follow while you install a garage door opener.

Steps to follow

First of all, check your existing garage door to ensure safety and readiness. Check whether the garage springs support the weight of the door, open and close without any hard effort. Check whether the door is lubricated properly and is free from any hanging cords.

You can construct the opener by putting together the rail along the belt or chain which guides the trolley. Then, according to the manufacturer’s instruction, attach the trolley to the rail.

Attach the trolley and rail connections to the motor which is the power unit of the garage opener with idler unit to the opposite side to it.

Now place the idler bracket on the wall above the garage door by attaching it on the centre position. The power unit will remain on the floor itself during this process.

Now open the door to its maximum position and raise the power unit above the garage door. You can adjust the power unit to the required height and you can place the scrap pieces and step ladder to board for tuning the height of the power unit.

You can now attach the power unit to the ceiling using the brackets.

You need to make sure that you install the controls inside and the keypad outside for you to operate. Electric eye unit can be installed towards the bottom of the door.

If you follow the above steps, you can install the garage door opener by yourself.

A ceiling fan remote control can be a real convenience and timesaver, not to mention a stress buster. Most of us know the feeling of turning on the ceiling fan, relaxing with a good book or movie then feeling too hot or cold after awhile. We know we want to adjust the fan but we’re just too comfortable—do we get up and fiddle with the chain pull or just stay put and hope our bodies adjust? That’s when we miss having a remote control!

If your ceiling fan did not come with a remote control, you can still have that convenience if you go to your local home improvement or hardware store and get a kit. Nearly every major ceiling fan manufacturer has a kit with which you can retrofit your fan so you have the ability to control it from wherever you wish. There are two types of remote controls, too, the handheld control and the one that is wall mounted. You might not want to consider the wall mounted remote control but at least you’ll always know where to find it!

A handheld remote control can easily be retrofitted into your existing ceiling fan but you must remember one important thing—no matter how expert you are, always turn off the electricity!! After that, it’s easy to get into the fan body and connect the wires from the kit’s receiver to the ones coming from the ceiling.

There are many types of ceiling fan remote control units from the simple ones that can turn it on and change the speed to ones that let you set a timer or allow you to control the temperature of the air! They range in price from below $25 to over $100, depending on the features you want your unit to include. If you want to retrofit an existing ceiling fan, be sure that the remote control unit is compatible with your fan.
